Speculum Technique
The speculum is a common instrument
available at any medical supply house. It's purpose is to hold
the vagina or anus open so a woman can be examined internally.
A small flashlight can then be shined into the orifice and much
can be learned about female anatomy. All women who have had a
pelvic exam are familiar with the speculum.
We suggest that the instrument be
warmed to body temperature and the expanding forks be lubricated
with KY jelly for easy insertion. Expand the instrument slowly
so the woman can get used to it. If you are using the anal speculum
expand the instrument in stages while communicating with the patient.
The whole emphasis should be on patient comfort. Become
